Local MLA Judy Darcy welcomes BC Arts Council funding for New West arts organizations

NEW WESTMINSTER – New Democrat MLA Judy Darcy is welcoming over $93,000 through the province’s BC Arts Council Grant Program to support local artists and arts organizations in New West. This round of funding is part of the government’s commitment to doubling investment in the BC Arts Council over four years.

“The record-level funding this government has provided the BC Arts Council is allowing our creative sectors to flourish,” said MLA Darcy. “This round of funding is focused on supporting diversity, and reflecting the multiculturalism in our community. I couldn’t be more proud of the artists and arts community here in New Westminster who are so deserving of our support.”

MLA Darcy said this is the second significant investment by the BC New Democrat government in the BC Arts Council, increasing its annual budget to $34 million in 2019/20. This record-level funding will allow the BC Arts Council to enhance arts and cultural development throughout the province, and to increase equity, diversity, and access for artists.

Recipients in New Westminster include:

  • The Douglas College Review, $23,300
  • John Oliver, $1,000
  • Savage Production Society, $69,000

These grants will go towards arts-based community development, operating support, and new educational opportunities for local artists, and will help ensure our creative sectors can continue to flourish in New West and across the province.

The New Democrat Government is delivering on enhanced opportunities for British Columbians to succeed in their creative careers. The BC Arts Council is the provincial government’s lead agency for arts funding and development.
