MLA Fraser welcomes funding for projects in Qualicum Beach and on Hornby Island

PORT ALBERNI – New Democrat MLA Scott Fraser is welcoming $500,000 in capital project funding to support two projects in the Mid Island-Pacific Rim area.

The Arrowsmith Search and Rescue Society in Qualicum Beach is receiving $250,000 in funding for a pre-engineered building which will provide parking and housing for search and rescue vehicles and equipment. The Hornby Island Arts Council is receiving $250,000 for the construction of a new ‘Art Centre’ building.

“Improving the parking and storage of search and rescue vehicles and equipment means that the Arrowsmith Search and Rescue Society will be better equipped to save lives,” said Fraser, MLA for Mid Island-Pacific Rim. “The Hornby Arts Council will also benefit from improved facilities. The construction of a new building will replace the 1960’s trailer it currently operates out of so more people can experience the value of art.”

The Arrowsmith Search and Rescue Society and the Hornby Island Arts Council are two of 63 community organizations benefitting from the capital project grant which funds upgrades to community facilities, infrastructure, and equipment.

In 2019-20, the Province is providing $5 million in capital project grants for organizations to buy and upgrade community facilities, infrastructure and equipment.

The capital projects program is part of the annual $140 million Community Gaming Grants program supporting about 5,000 community organizations that deliver arts and culture, sport, environment, public safety, human and social services and parent advisory councils.
