Todd Stone’s flip flop on speculation and vacancy tax

VICTORIA – Today in Question Period, BC Liberal MLA Todd Stone criticized government’s Speculation and Vacancy tax, which affects people who leave homes vacant in the areas hardest hit by the housing crisis.

But when running for BC Liberal leader, Stone supported this measure. He promised to:

“Levy vacant home owners a yearly property tax surcharge unless they take steps to rent their property.” (Todd Stone press release, Nov 10, 2017)

Just three weeks after announcing that policy, Stone blasted current BC Liberal Leader Andrew Wilkinson for not having a plan to tackle housing affordability:

“The ideas on housing affordability, the ideas on childcare, they just aren’t there!” MLA for Kamloops-South Thompson (Kelowna Debate, Dec. 2, 2017)

A few weeks after that, he told Wilkinson:

“Your platform is completely devoid of addressing the affordability challenge.” (Vancouver Debate, January 23, 2018)

Now, Todd Stone has flip flopped and is fully behind Wilkinson’s plan to cancel the speculation tax and let vacant homes go unchecked.
