BC Liberals continue to let down coastal communities by opposing additional ferry sailings, says NDP’s Trevena

VICTORIA – Just last week, John Horgan’s BC NDP government restored 2,700 sailings on 10 routes that the BC Liberals had cut. In yesterday’s question period, the BC Liberals criticized the new sailings, supposedly on environmental grounds – while simultaneously making the case for more tanker traffic from the Kinder Morgan pipeline.

“The BC Liberals are showing yet again that they don’t understand B.C.’s coastal communities,” said Transportation Minister Claire Trevena. “The BC Liberals cut sailings and hiked ferry fares for years, and now they’re finding ways to oppose the improvements our government have made for people in ferry-dependent communities.”

Trevena says that supporting Kinder Morgan while opposing increased ferry sailings shows that the BC Liberals aren’t working for people on the coast.

“We’ve been standing up for people in coastal communities by improving ferry service and protecting the coast from increased tanker traffic,” said Trevena. “It’s disappointing that even after 16 years of neglect, Andrew Wilkinson and the BC Liberals haven’t learned a thing. They’re still not working for people in coastal communities.”
