BC Liberals vote against speculation and vacancy tax

VICTORIA – The BC Liberals voted against the speculation and vacancy tax today, making it clear they’re still not willing to take action to curb the housing crisis that their government ignored for years.

“The BC Liberals spent years ignoring real estate speculation as housing prices skyrocketed out of reach for people,” said Finance Minister Carole James. “Now they’re standing in the way of measures that would make housing more affordable for people.”

Despite BC Liberal opposition, the measure was successfully passed by the legislature. The BC Liberals have committed to cancelling the speculation tax within 100 days if they formed government.

“Given the chance, Andrew Wilkinson would drive housing prices even further out of reach for British Columbians,” added Minister James. “Again and again, the BC Liberals put the top 2% first and make everyone else pay the price.”

John Horgan and the New Democrat government are tackling housing affordability head on, taking action to curb speculation and bring the cost of housing under control.
