MLA D’Eith welcomes increased utilization of sustainable Mission Municipal Forest

MISSION – New Democrat MLA Bob D’Eith says that an increase in the allowable annual cut for the Mission Municipal Forest is a sign that sustainable management practices are paying off and will create more jobs in the community.

“The Mission Municipal Forest is an outstanding example of sustainable, innovative stewardship of our natural resources,” said D’Eith, MLA for Maple Ridge – Mission. “This increase in the annual cut allowance reflects this careful management and means people in Mission will see even greater economic returns from their forest for years to come.”

The new annual cut for the area, known as Tree Farm Licence 26, is 60,000 cubic metres, an increase of 33% from the previous level of 45,000 cubic metres, which was set in 2010. The increase reflects the fact that tree stands in the area have higher volumes and are growing faster than previously estimated.

The licence has been held by the District of Mission since 1958, and the licence area is recognized as the first community-managed forestry operation in B.C. The 10,000-hectare forest also provides opportunities for hiking, boating, fishing, and mountain biking.

The allowable annual cut determination is made by B.C.’s chief forester Diane Nicholls. It is an independent, professional judgment based on information ranging from technical forestry reports, First Nations and public input, and the government’s social and economic goals.
