MLA Jennifer Rice welcomes BC Arts Council Grants for the communities of Skidegate, Prince Rupert, Queen Charlotte and Bella Coola

PRINCE RUPERT – Local MLA Jennifer Rice is welcoming $320,643 through the province’s BC Arts Council Grant Program for community projects that will create new programs that encourage more inclusivity and accessibility in the creative sector, including those that support emerging Indigenous artists.

“The promotion of local arts and culture is essential in fostering inclusive communities,” said Rice. “The BC Arts Council Grants will support a diverse set of talented artists in the North Coast.”

Recipients in the communities of Skidegate, Prince Rupert, Queen Charlotte and Bella Coola benefiting from this latest round of grants include:

  • U’mista Cultural Society: $108,000
  • Haida Gwaii Museum Society: $111,600
  • Northern British Columbia Museum Association: $41,300
  • Haida Gwaii Arts Council Society: $19,424
  • Prince Rupert Community Arts Council: $37,319
  • Bella Coola Valley Arts Council: $3,000

Budget 2019 announced an additional $15 million over the next three years to the BC Arts Council, bringing its annual budget to $34 million in 2019-20.

In addition to new programs, this investment will also enable the council to further build on the funding increase provided in 2018 to enhance the capacity of arts and culture organizations in more than 200 communities.
