MLA Trevena welcomes extended support for people affected by apartment fire

CAMPBELL RIVER – New Democrat MLA Claire Trevena says the provincial government is providing accommodations for people displaced by the April 8 apartment fire in Campbell River.

“Losing your home to a fire is devastating in the best of times, but during a pandemic it is even more challenging,” said Trevena, MLA for North Island. “Our government is funding extended hotel stays for those affected and making sure they have access to what they need during this difficult time.”

The fire occurred on April 8 and the Province provided funding for accommodation, food and basic supplies for those displaced for the first week. In response to requests from the community, the Province has now extended housing supports.

MLA Trevena said the New Democrat government is paying for hotel rooms for people displaced by the fire until new homes are available. The Province, through BC Housing, has come to an agreement with the Coast Discovery Inn to allow people to stay there in the interim, while they work to secure longer-term housing.

Access to safe and affordable housing is a priority of the BC NDP government, which has committed to building 114,000 units of new affordable housing through partnerships over ten years.
