VICTORIA – Friday’s updated Labour Force Survey from Statistics Canada shows that under Premier Christy Clark, B.C.’s private sector job record continues to be second worst in all of Canada.
“It’s unfortunate, but not surprising, that B.C. private sector job growth continues to be dismal considering the premier and her B.C. Liberal government are neglecting virtually every sector of the economy,” said New Democrat finance spokesperson Carole James.
“Even if LNG provides economic benefits for B.C. years down the road, it won’t make up for the lasting damage done to other important sectors that are being neglected, nor for the loss of skilled workers that our province could be faced with as British Columbians flee the province in search of work elsewhere,” said James.
Figures from Statistics Canada show that B.C. jobs flat-lined last month, and private sector jobs saw a total of 10,500 in job losses.
Statistics Canada also showed that regions with resource development potential – areas outside of the Lower Mainland and Victoria – are in fact faced with declining populations.
“B.C. workers and their families shouldn’t have to run from our province because the Liberal government can’t manage the economy,” said James.
“We need to see a balanced approach from government, one that results in long-term job creation and sustainable economic development, not just empty rhetoric about so-called plans that clearly aren’t working.”
