NORTH SHORE – BC NDP MLA Bowinn Ma says that people on the North Shore will benefit from funding that will help mitigate climate change and strengthen the community’s resilience.
“Investing in clean energy infrastructure is a critical step toward building a more sustainable future for North Vancouver and the entire province,” says Bowinn Ma, MLA for North Vancouver – Lonsdale. “By launching this project with Lonsdale Energy, we are not only reducing greenhouse gas emissions but also creating more affordable and reliable energy solutions that will help us meet our climate goals while also improving the quality of life for everyone here.”
Lonsdale Energy will be benefiting from $12,762,402 in funding from the provincial government, in addition to $4,786,200 from the Government of Canada, and $6,382,398 from local partners to construct a sewer heat recovery facility plant.
The new energy plant will displace natural gas consumption and increase the use of renewable energy by extracting heat from raw sewage to provide heating to over 15,600 residents served by its district energy system. The operational facility will include two water-to-water electric heat pumps with a heating capacity of at least 5 MW. Additionally, the project will include environmental enhancements to the area near Mosquito Creek and improvements to the surrounding public spaces.
Across the province, communities will benefit from more energy-efficient buildings, improved clean energy production, and better access to clean energy transportation as part of a joint investment of more than $114 million from the federal and provincial governments and local partners.
