VICTORIA – BC NDP MLA Paul Choi’s private member’s bill, the Korean Heritage Month Act, passed unanimously in the BC Legislature on Monday.
“This is a proud moment. Not just for me, as the sponsor of the bill, but for the entire Korean-Canadian community in B.C.,” says Paul Choi, MLA for Burnaby South-Metrotown. “Korean Heritage Month is more than a celebration, it’s a recognition of the generations of Korean-Canadian’s who have contributed to our province.”
The month of October is now designated as Korean Heritage Month. October is a historically significant month for the Korean-Canadian community as Korean people celebrate National Foundation Day on October 3, which commemorates the legendary formation of the first Korean state of Gojoseon.
The Korean Heritage Month Act provides an opportunity to coordinate, support and promote events, initiatives and programs to remember, celebrate and educate future generations about the remarkable contributions of Korean-Canadians in the province of British Columbia.
