BC NDP MLA Davidson says funding will help equip the Central Coast and Haida Gwaii for emergencies

DAAJING GIIDS – BC New Democrat MLA Tamara Davidson says the Central Coast and Haida Gwaii will be better prepared for emergencies with provincial funding for emergency operations centres.

“Training, recruitment, and up-to-date equipment are extremely important for rural and Indigenous communities to ensure that when emergencies occur in remote places, we’re prepared to respond,” said Tamara Davidson, MLA for North Coast-Haida Gwaii. “We provide regular funding to support local emergency operations centres so that we can help keep people safe in all scenarios.”

The following First Nations and local governments will receive funding:

  • Central Coast Regional District – IT equipment, power supply, communications gear and furniture for a remote EOC setup, $29,983
  • Daajing Giids – EOC training and tsunami siren project to strengthen EOC, $30,000
  • Kitasoo Xai’xais Nation – PPE, trailer upgrades, shelter equipment and training to enhance emergency response readiness, $30,000
  • Masset – Secondary EOC equipment, training and recruitment to expand emergency response capacity, $21,135

The Province is providing approximately $3.5 million for 110 projects to support local emergency operations centres through the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund (CEPF).

Emergency operations centres (EOC) coordinate people, actions and resources, and support first responders on the ground. They also ensure people receive timely information, emergency support services and other vital assistance throughout an emergency.

Through this fund, since 2017, more than $25 million has supported more than 820 projects throughout the province. The Province has committed $369 million through all CEPF streams since it was established in 2017. To date, more than $350 million has been provided to First Nations and local governments for more than 2,800 CEPF projects throughout the province.
