BURNABY – MLAs Anne Kang, Katrina Chen, Raj Chouhan and Janet Routledge say that funding announced today will help B.C.-based musicians to develop their careers and grow the local music industry.

“As a former music teacher, I know the value of music to people’s lives and communities. Music bridges cultures, languages and backgrounds, fostering understanding and empathy among people,” says Anne kang, MLA for Burnaby-Deer Lake. “From career development to live events and business initiatives, our government is empowering musicians and music companies to thrive, fostering a robust and inclusive music scene in Burnaby.”

“Investments in the arts have profound benefits that extend beyond support for musicians,” says Katrina Chen, MLA for Burnaby-Lougheed. “By fostering creativity and innovation, we’re building a resilient and vibrant community in Burnaby, where the arts play a central role in enriching lives and driving economic prosperity.”

Over $3.3 million is being distributed to hundreds of artists and companies for career development, live music events, business development, industry initiatives, and attracting out-of-province talent to record in B.C.

In Burnaby, recipients include:

Career development stream:

  • Cory Weeds, $16,163

Live music stream:

  • Vancity Roots & Culture Experience Festival, $20,000

“This support will not only empower artists to develop their careers but also foster a vibrant cultural scene that enriches the lives of people in our community,” says Raj Chouhan, MLA for Burnaby-Edmonds.

“As we invest in the development and promotion of local musicians, we’re laying the foundation for a vibrant and sustainable music industry in Burnaby,” says Janet Routledge, MLA for Burnaby North. “This funding will encourage growth and collaboration within our community, ensuring a bright future for our talented artists.”

More than 200 musicians and music companies will benefit from this funding, which is part of the New Democrat government’s $7.5 million investment in 2023 to develop and support musician’s careers and promote the music industry here in B.C. This is one of the many ways the government is supporting creative industries and creative professionals in the province.
