Funding for ground search and rescue groups will make the backcountry safer says NDP MLA Brittny Anderson

NELSON – New Democrat MLA Brittny Anderson says annual funding from the provincial government will help ensure that Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR) groups and their volunteers are there when people need help in the backcountry.

“We are fortunate to live in an area with so many epic places to explore. It is important to be prepared when heading out, but if something happens, it is critical that search and rescue crews have the life-saving tools they need,” said Brittny Anderson, MLA for Nelson-Creston. “With this support, local search and rescue crews will have better access to training and equipment, so they can continue to be there for people in the Kootenays during their time of need.”

The following search and rescue organizations will receive their share of $6 million from the province through funding to the BC Search and Rescue Association (BCSARA) with the average distribution amount being approximately $63,000 per group:

  • Creston Valley Search and Rescue
  • Kaslo Search and Rescue
  • Nelson Search and Rescue

Funding will support lifesaving rescue equipment, essential training, protective equipment for volunteers and administration costs, such as insurance.

This is the second year of this annual funding agreement between the province and BCSARA, which is the only agreement of its kind in Canada.
