VICTORIA – Jenny Kwan, New Democrat MLA for Vancouver-Mt. Pleasant, has tendered her resignation to the Speaker of the legislature effective immediately. Kwan has secured the nomination to run as a candidate for Vancouver East in the upcoming federal election.
“Over the past 19 years Jenny has been a groundbreaker and inspiration to many,” said New Democrat leader John Horgan. “On behalf of our caucus, I want to thank her from the bottom of our hearts for the contributions she’s made to British Columbia and wish her all the best in her future endeavours.”
Kwan has worked in East Vancouver for the last 25 years, from being a lone opposition councillor in the City of Vancouver, to being a cabinet minister, to being one of just two Opposition MLAs holding 77 BC Liberals to account. Kwan extends her deep gratitude to the people of Vancouver Mt. Pleasant for their trust, support and encouragement.
“It has been a tremendous honour to serve the people of Vancouver Mt. Pleasant for the last 19 years and to serve alongside all members of the House over the last five consecutive general elections,” said Kwan in her letter of resignation.
Kwan’s resignation takes effect as of midnight July 8, so her last full day as MLA was July 7, 2015.
