Kevin Falcon’s BC United Party using Red Cross wildfire donations to harvest personal information

Kevin Falcon and the BC United Party have set up a Red Cross donation page, regarding the British Columbia wildfires, which collects personal information of donors for partisan purposes.

“This is reprehensible. Kevin Falcon and his party are exploiting this crisis and the generosity of British Columbians to harvest their personal information,” said BC NDP MLA Ravi Parmar. “We shouldn’t need to tell Kevin Falcon that the worst wildfire season in our history isn’t an opportunity to help himself or his party.”

Yesterday, Kevin Falcon and several BCUP MLAs shared a link while calling on British Columbians to donate through their specialized site to the Red Cross. The micro-site includes the logo of the BCUP and the amount raised through this online feature.

A potential donor would have to submit their name, address, cell phone number and email address. Below the personal information fields, the micro-site includes an indication regarding how that information can be collected by the BCUP:

“In making your donation you are consenting to the Canadian Red Cross disclosing your donation information to BC United.”

“It is misleading at best to use this crisis as a means of collecting personal information to use for partisan purposes,” said Parmar. “I am calling on Kevin Falcon to put an end to this despicable data mining scheme and to apologize to British Columbians.”
