SMITHERS- New Democrat MLA Doug Donaldson is welcoming nearly $122,000 in capital project funding for two community organizations in Smithers. One $72,083 grant will go to the Bulkley Valley Gymnastics Association to support facility renovations of the Smithers Saltos Gymnastics building. Another $49,759 grant will go to the Dze L K’ant Friendship Centre for building revitalizations- including an upgrade that will allow the organization to paint a mural to honour murdered Indigenous women and girls. These community organizations are two of 63 benefitting from the capital project grant, which funds upgrades to community facilities, infrastructure, and equipment.
“These organizations provide spaces for people to connect and services that make our community stronger,” said Donaldson. “This funding will help them continue this work in upgraded facilities that suit their needs.”
In 2019-20, the Province is providing $5 million in capital project grants for organizations to buy and upgrade community facilities, infrastructure and equipment.
The capital projects program is part of the annual $140 million Community Gaming Grants program supporting about 5,000 community organizations that deliver arts and culture, sport, environment, public safety, human and social services and parent advisory councils.
