Local MLA Fraser welcomes BC Arts Council

PORT ALBERNI – New Democrat MLA Scott Fraser is welcoming $192,861 through the province’s BC Arts Council Grant Program for community projects that will create new programs that encourage more inclusivity and accessibility in the creative sector, including those that support emerging Indigenous artists.

“Local art organizations will be able to deliver accessible programs throughout our local communities,” said MLA Fraser. “Our government recognizes the benefits that the creative sector provides are immeasurable and critical for healthy communities.”

Budget 2019 announced an additional $15 million over the next three years to the BC Arts Council, bringing its annual budget to $34 million in 2019-20.

In addition to new programs, this investment will also enable the council to further build on the funding increase provided in 2018 to enhance the capacity of arts and culture organizations in more than 200 communities.

Recipients in Mid Island-Pacific Rim benefiting from this latest round of grants include:

  • Cumberland & District Historical Society – $20,000
  • Alberni Valley Museum – $76,700
  • Pacific Rim Arts Society – $43,000
  • Arts Council of Alberni Valley – $18,461
  • Hornby Island Arts Council – $8,000
  • Hornby Festival Society – $4,700
  • Arts Denman – $8,000
  • Tofino Arts Council Society – $8,000
  • Judy LeBlanc (Fanny Bay) – $6,000
