VICTORIA – New Democrat MLA Mitzi Dean is welcoming new, much needed affordable homes for Indigenous peoples in Colwood. The Vancouver Aboriginal Land Trust will be receiving $24.8 million in capital funding to help build a new 124-unit Indigenous housing project in the community.
“People across British Columbia are struggling to access safe and affordable homes, but Indigenous people are disproportionally affected by our housing crisis,” said MLA Mitzi Dean. “I am proud that our government is working together with Indigenous partners to make sure we develop housing that meet their communities’ needs.”
These new homes are part of the first series of homes selected through the Building BC: Indigenous Housing Fund, a 10 year, $550 million commitment to build 1,750 new units of affordable housing for Indigenous peoples.
BC Housing will work with the Vancouver Aboriginal Land Trust to finalize the project over the next few months.
