SECHELT – New Democrat MLA Nicholas Simons is welcoming new, affordable homes for the shíshálh First Nation. The shíshálh First Nation will be receiving $6.8 million in funding to support 34 new homes for singles and families on reserve.
“For too long Indigenous people have struggled to find good, affordable homes in their communities,” said Simons. “Our government is responding to this critical need by becoming the first province in Canada to fund on-reserve housing.”
These new homes are part of the first series of housing projects selected through the Building BC: Indigenous Housing Fund, a 10 year, $550 million commitment to build 1,750 new units of affordable housing for Indigenous peoples.
BC Housing will work with the shíshálh First Nation to finalize the project over the next few months.
