NANAIMO – New Democrat MLA Sheila Malcomson says that provincial funding for arts organizations and people working in the arts will help the local sector continue to recover from the economic impacts of the pandemic.

“Nanaimo has fantastic artists who connect and move our community with music, dance and storytelling,” said Sheila Malcolmson, MLA for Nanaimo. “Arts groups support Nanaimo’s well-being, so our B.C. government is supporting the Nanaimo arts community with over $375,000 in new funding.”

In Nanaimo, the following projects are receiving funding, for a total of over $375,000

  • Nanaimo Art Gallery $25,000
  • Vancouver Island Symphony $77,677
  • Nanaimo Museum $83,174
  • Nanaimo Art Gallery $107,968
  • Mid Island Metis Nation $35,523
  • Crimson Coast Dance Society $46,700

The funding is distributed through the BC Arts Council and will provide a total of $34.5 million to arts and culture organizations throughout B.C. Grants will help support infrastructure projects and address rising costs for organizations who have been impacted by a loss of audiences, reduced profits, and increased expenses since the pandemic.
