MLA Sheila Malcolmson says Nanaimo is more prepared thanks to flood mitigation project

NANAIMO – New Democrat MLA Sheila Malcolmson says that people in Nanaimo will be safer during future flooding events thanks to the completion of a flood hazard mapping project.

“As we face the impacts of our changing climate, it gets more and more important to plan proactively and protect our communities,” said Sheila Malcolmson, MLA for Nanaimo. “Our government’s support for the Regional District of Nanaimo’s flood hazard mapping project will support better planning and outcomes for people.”

The Regional District of Nanaimo received $130,000 in funding for a Nanaimo River flood hazard mapping projects. The project conducted analysis and included, forecasting and modelling of flood scenarios to better assess how to keep people and lands safer and more well-protected during flood situations.

Across the province, a total of 24 flood mitigation projects have been recently completed to make people and communities safer. The projects were supported by more than $10.8 million in funding, cost-shared by the provincial and federal governments.
