NDP MLA Bailey says funding will help local government to deliver housing faster in Vancouver

New Democrat MLA Brenda Bailey says local governments will receive funding that will help them implement new provincial legislation to build more homes for people faster.

“Housing is the number one issue in Vancouver and top of mind for almost everyone in the city “said Brenda Bailey, MLA for Vancouver-False Creek. “ For too long, the previous government neglected the growing need for housing, as prices skyrocketed. With this funding, our government is taking further action to help cities reduce the barriers and build homes for people, faster.”

In Vancouver, the City of Vancouver is receiving in total $3,295,650. The Regional District of Metro Vancouver is also receiving $268,001.

In response to the new provincial housing legislation passed in 2023, New Democrats are providing $51 million to 188 local governments to help them meet the new requirements.

This money will be utilized by local governments to improve planning, development and reporting processes, hire new staff and consultants and help governing bodies become more efficient at approving housing. Smaller municipalities will especially benefit from this funding as they have fewer resources to make changes.

This funding is part of the historic $19-billion housing investment by the B.C. Government. Since 2017, the Province has more than 77,000 homes that have been delivered or are underway.
