NDP MLA Brenda Bailey says grants for Vancouver organizations will help people access vital community services

VANCOUVER – New Democrat MLA Brenda Bailey says that people who receive services from local non-profits will benefit from funding to improve community health, accessibility and well-being.

“The challenges of the past few years have highlighted how important it is to invest in people, because everyone deserves to have support when they need it most,” said Brenda Bailey, MLA for Vancouver-False Creek. “In one way or another, we all benefit from the work of our local community organizations and they make a big difference in the lives of those who depend on them. Our government is committed to delivering results for people and this funding will go far to help everyone in our community live fuller, happier lives.”

This year, 244 organizations in Vancouver received over $14 million in funding through the human and social services stream of the Community Gaming Grants program. Recipients include:

  • Alzheimer Society of B.C. – $250,000
  • British Columbia Lions Society for Children with Disabilities – $250,000
  • Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver – $202,000
  • Canadian Mental Health Association, Vancouver-Fraser Branch – $188,000
  • Access Pro Bono Society of British Columbia – $147,000

This year, the New Democrat government will distribute more than $61 million in grants to 1,364 human and social services organizations around B.C. These organizations make a difference for people through food banks, children and youth programs, mental health support, and other services that enhance health and wellbeing.

Quick Facts:

  • Community Gaming Grants provides around $140 million annually to approximately 5,000 not-for-profit organizations that deliver services to people throughout the province.
  • In addition to human and social services, the grants fund arts, culture and sport, public safety and environmental conservation, as well as parent and district parent advisory councils in B.C. schools.
