NDP MLA Harwinder Sandhu says grants will support local arts & culture and sports

VERNON – Harwinder Sandhu, MLA for Vernon-Monashee, says the New Democrat government’s grants for local not-for-profit organizations will support arts & culture and sports organizations, enriching the lives of community members.

“Local organizations are the heartbeat of our communities,” said MLA Sandhu. “They help us to stay active and teach us more about the people and places around us and across the world. I want to thank them for their hard work and look forward to attending some of their events soon.”

This nearly $730,000 for 27 organizations in Vernon and Lumby is part of over $43 million being distributed to nearly 1,400 arts & culture and sport sector organizations across British Columbia. The arts & culture stream supports groups like choirs, arts councils, theatre companies, musicians, art galleries, and organizations that promote and celebrate diverse cultures from around the world. The sports stream supports local sports organizations in all kinds of sports for people of all ages and abilities.

Some of the organizations receiving funding in Vernon-Monashee include the Lumby & District Figure Skating Club, Caetani Cultural Society, Powerhouse Theatrical Society, and Vernon Rowing and Dragon Boat Club.

The Community Gaming Grants Program distributes up to $140 million worth of grants annually to not-for-profit organizations across British Columbia that improve and enrich the lives of people and communities. These include sports, arts, environmental, quality of life, and health and safety organizations.
