VANCOUVER – New Democrat MLA Niki Sharma is making climate change mitigation and adaptation in East Vancouver one of her top priorities by launching Vancouver-Hastings’ first local Climate Action Team.
“I hear from people everyday who are anxious and eager for action. We need to come together as a community to respond to climate change, transition away from fossil fuels and prepare for the impacts that are already upon us,” said Sharma, MLA for Vancouver-Hastings. “With this local Climate Action Team we can bring the work of CleanBC to a local level to ensure that we are preparing our community and neighbours, in a socially just way.”
The Vancouver-Hastings Climate Action Team will help MLA Sharma engage with constituents, stakeholders, and relevant decision-makers to ensure the community is better prepared to face the impacts of climate change. This work will include: developing community plans that align with the pillars of Clean BC; sharing resources and information with the community; and helping MLA Sharma advocate for the necessary action to make the community climate ready.
MLA Sharma is looking for members with a deep knowledge of the community and local expertise on climate change and/or one or more pillars of the CleanBC Plan.
“This is our community and our future,” said Sharma. “I know we can face the challenges in front us by working together.”
