NDP MLA Roly Russell says grants will support local arts & culture and sports

GRAND FORKS – Roly Russell, MLA for Boundary-Similkameen, says the New Democrat government’s grants for local not-for-profit organizations will support arts & culture and sports organizations, enriching the lives of community members.

“Local sports, arts and culture organizations enrich our lives by teaching us and our families things like teamwork or history, while having fun at the same time,” said MLA Russell. “They’ve done great work helping keep our bodies and minds active during the COVID-19 pandemic, and I’m happy to see their good work continues to be supported.”

This over $210,000 for 10 organizations in the Similkameen, South Okanagan, and Boundary regions is part of over $43 million being distributed to nearly 1,400 arts & culture and sport sector organizations across British Columbia. The arts & culture stream supports groups like choirs, arts councils, theatre companies, musicians, art galleries, and organizations that promote and celebrate diverse cultures from around the world. The sports stream supports local sports organizations in all kinds of sports for people of all ages and abilities.

Some of the organizations receiving funding in the area include the Grand Forks Art Gallery Society, the Osoyoos Curling Club Society, and the Kokanee Summer Swim Club Society.

The Community Gaming Grants Program distributes up to $140 million worth of grants annually to not-for-profit organizations across British Columbia that improve and enrich the lives of people and communities. These include sports, arts, environmental, quality of life, and health and safety organizations.
