NDP MLA Ronna-Rae Leonard says grants will support local arts & culture and sports

COMOX VALLEY – Ronna-Rae Leonard, MLA for Courtenay-Comox, says the New Democrat government’s grants for local not-for-profit organizations will support arts & culture and sports organizations, enriching the lives of community members.

“Playing a team sport or watching a live performance are great ways for families to enjoy themselves and build a sense of community,” said MLA Leonard. “I’m glad to see continued support for these local organizations who do so much to keep us happy and healthy, and look forward to attending their games and performances with everyone soon.”

This over $570,000 for 21 organizations in the Comox Valley is part of over $43 million being distributed to nearly 1,400 arts & culture and sport sector organizations across British Columbia. The arts & culture stream supports groups like choirs, arts councils, theatre companies, musicians, art galleries, and organizations that promote and celebrate diverse cultures from around the world. The sports stream supports local sports organizations in all kinds of sports for people of all ages and abilities.

Some of the organizations receiving funding in Courtenay-Comox include the Chimo Gymnastics Club, the Performing Arts BC Festivals Society, the Comox Valley Raiders Youth Football Club, and the Courtenay and District Historical Society.

The Community Gaming Grants Program distributes up to $140 million worth of grants annually to not-for-profit organizations across British Columbia that improve and enrich the lives of people and communities. These include sports, arts, environmental, quality of life, and health and safety organizations.
