NDP MLA says funding for emergency response and recovery will keep people safer in the Cowichan Valley

COWICHAN VALLEY  New Democrat MLA Doug Routley says that emergency response and recovery efforts will be strengthened with funding for local emergency operations centres in the Cowichan Valley.

“People throughout the Cowichan Valley know how important it is to be prepared for disasters and emergencies,” said Doug Routley, MLA for Nanaimo-North Cowichan. “We’re supporting the Cowichan Valley Regional District in their work to strengthen their emergency operations centre to help more people in the event of an emergency.”

The Cowichan Valley Regional District is receiving $150,000 for their regional 2023 EOC project, which includes Duncan, Ladysmith, Lake Cowichan, and North Cowichan as regional partners.

Nearly $3 million in funding from the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund (CEPF) is going to over 100 local governments and First Nations across B.C. The funding will assist in purchasing and installing equipment and supplies to maintain or improve emergency operations centres.

Emergency operations centres are an essential part of emergency response, where representatives come together to co-ordinate actions and resources, and to support people responding on the ground.
