CAMPBELL RIVER – New Democrat MLA Michele Babchuk says that emergency response and recovery efforts will be strengthened with funding for local emergency operations centres in the Strathcona Region.
“Having emergency operations centres is crucial to keep more people safe and informed,” said Michele Babchuk, MLA for North Island. “This funding for the Strathcona Regional District’s emergency operations centre will make sure we can face emergencies stronger together.”
Strathcona Regional District is receiving $329,200 for their regional EOC project, which includes Campbell River, Gold River, Ka:’yu:’k’t’h’/Che:k’tles7et’h’ First Nations, Mount Waddington Regional District, Nuchatlaht First Nation, Port Alice, Sayward, Tahsis, We Wai Kai Nation and Zeballos as regional partners.
Nearly $3 million in funding from the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund (CEPF) is going to over 100 local governments and First Nations across B.C. The funding will assist in purchasing and installing equipment and supplies to maintain or improve emergency operations centres.
Emergency operations centres are an essential part of emergency response, where representatives come together to co-ordinate actions and resources, and to support people responding on the ground.
