NANAIMO – New Democrat MLAs Sheila Malcolmson and Adam Walker say that people in the Regional District of Nanaimo will benefit from provincial funding to help reduce risks from future disaster related natural hazards and climate change.
“People need to feel safe in the event of a natural disaster or emergency,” said Sheila Malcolmson, MLA for Nanaimo. “By funding these local initiatives and solutions in the Regional District of Nanaimo, we’re making sure people are safer and B.C. is more resilient in these events.”
Other projects being funded in the region are listed below:
- The Regional District of Nanaimo – $150,000 for a geohazard risk prioritization study
- Snaw-Naw-As First Nation – $148,359.70 for a sea level rise and flood inundation integrated assessment and adaptation plan
“Natural disasters can happen at any time, but the more we prepare, the safer we all will be. This funding for emergency management and mitigation will help ensure that our communities have plans in place to keep people safe,” said Adam Walker, MLA for Parksville-Qualicum.
A total of $23.9 million from the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund (CEPF) will support communities to better prepare for, mitigate and respond to climate-related emergencies such floods and extreme temperatures.
The Disaster Risk Reduction – Climate Adaptation stream under the CEPF supports the Province’s Climate Preparedness and Adaptation Strategy. The CEPF is administered through the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) and funds projects that strengthen the resilience of First Nations and local governments in responding to and preparing for natural disasters and climate change.
