NDP MLA says that people in the South Island will benefit from emergency operations centre funding

VICTORIA – New Democrat MLAs Mitzi Dean and Lana Popham say that new provincial emergency preparedness funding will help improve emergency operation centres, and better equip local governments in the South Island to respond to emergencies and keep people safe.

“A strong response at the community level is vital to keep people safe during emergencies, said Mitzi Dean, MLA for Esquimalt-Metchosin. “This funding for Esquimalt, Metchosin, View Royal, and other Westshore communities will help them build capacity and purchase the equipment they need to prepare for emergencies.”

Over $3.2 million in funding is being shared among 84 First Nations and local governments to help communities build or upgrade emergency operations centres (EOCs), purchase equipment, or enhance capacity through volunteer recruitment, retention and training.

“People in communities across Greater Victoria are going to benefit from this funding for emergency preparedness,” said Lana Popham, MLA for Saanich South. “Whether it’s upgrading equipment or training volunteers and staff, we are increasing local capacity so that communities can successfully respond to emergency situations.”

The District of Metchosin is receiving $25,000 in funding. This grant will be used for portable power solutions as back-up power supply for the Municipal Hall and EOC.

Other projects being funded in the region are listed below:

  • Capital Regional District – $24,665 for EOC Upgrade Project
  • Central Saanich – $25,000 for Training and Equipment Upgrade
  • Esquimalt – $22,490 for EOC IT Equipment
  • Highlands – $25,000 for East Fire Hall Backup Generator 
  • Langford – $20,950 for Established Dedicated EOC Room
  • North Saanich – $24,038 for EOC Staff Training
  • Sidney – $18,788 for EOC Training and Exercise
  • Victoria – $12,800 for Smoke and Heat Readiness
  • View Royal – $25,000 for Equipment and Installation, Supplies and Training

Budget 2022 provides $2.1 billion to support communities in building back better from recent disasters, and to strengthen defences to make sure people across B.C. are protected from future disasters.
