NORTH VANCOUVER – New Democrat MLA Susie Chant says families in North Vancouver will save money on child care as local child care sites become $10 a Day ChildCareBC sites where fees are capped at a maximum of $200 a month per child.

“Partnering with Tsleil-Waututh Nation and Parkgate Society, we are bringing over 100 new $10-a-day childcare spaces to our community” said Susie Chant, MLA for North Vancouver-Seymour. “With these new inclusive and affordable spaces, more people will have access to quality childcare that will benefit families in our community for generations to come. With Capilano University expanding it’s Early Childhood Education Program, we will also have the spaces to train the ECE staff”.

“$10 a Day Child Care makes a significant positive difference to families, the community, and our society,” said Adele Wilson, Executive Director of Parkgate Society. “Affordable child care means parents no longer need to choose between quality child care and their careers. More parents can return to the workforce; consequently, providing them with greater financial stability and relieving some of the stress that can weaken the family unit. Our community benefits from healthier families, and our society benefits from more people in the workforce and an increased tax base, all of which contribute to a stronger and healthier economy.”

The following child care sites in North Vancouver-Seymour are becoming $10 a Day ChildCareBC sites, which means a total of 126 child care spaces will have fees dramatically reduced for parents:

Seymour School Age Care, 24 school-age spaces.
Parkgate Child and Family Centre, 72 spaces; 12 infant-toddler; 25 three years old to kindergarten; 35 school-age.
Tsleil-Waututh Child and Family Development Centre, 30 spaces; 10 infant-toddler; 20 three years old to kindergarten.
This increases the number of $10 a Day ChildCareBC spaces available for families across the province, from 2,500 when the program began in 2018, to more than 6,500. Through a partnership with the Government of Canada, the number of $10 a Day ChildCareBC spaces in the province will more than double again to 12,500 by December 2022.

In addition to $10 a Day child care spaces, the BC New Democrat government is helping tens of thousands of families save as much as $1,600 a month on child care through the Child Care Fee Reduction Initiative and the Affordable Child Care Benefit.

By the end of this year, the average rate of child care will be reduced by 50% from 2019 levels for children five and younger.
