NORTH SHORE – New Democrat MLAs Bowinn Ma and Susie Chant say that an historic $29 million investment for the North Shore will enable the community to fund key projects, ensuring that people have services they can rely on as populations grow.

“As a growing community, North Vancouver District continues to see increased demand for its excellent services says Susie MLA for North Vancouver-Seymour. “I’m really pleased that we are able to provide local governments additional supports toward meeting their local priorities.”

As communities continue to grow, local governments are having to meet increased strain on infrastructure and amenities including, roads, transit, water and electrical systems, as well as community centers, parks and social services. The Growing Communities Fund is a landmark investment that will see the BCNDP government distribute $1 billion across B.C. ‘s 188 municipalities and regional districts to support their unique needs.

The following local governments are receiving the following:

  • The City of North Vancouver is receiving 10,986,000
  • The District of North Vancouver is receiving 10,254,000
  • The District of West Vancouver is receiving 8,000,000

“Record numbers of people are choosing to make British Columbia home, and the City of North Vancouver has been a leader in delivering the kind of housing that families and individuals need,” said Bowinn Ma, MLA for North Vancouver-Lonsdale. “From mobility lanes and utility lines to playgrounds and parks, we’re providing funding to support municipal infrastructure projects that people in growing communities like the North Shore need to thrive.”

This one-time fund supports the Union of BC Municipalities’ (UBCM) 2022 Resolution EB58, Improving Provincial Grant Process, and recommendation five of their 2021 report, Ensuring Local Government Financial Resiliency. The grants are intended to complement, rather than displace, existing infrastructure funding (like sewer, water, roads).

With these funds in hand we can continue to deliver infrastructure that supports the health and activity of all people and advance the City as a vibrant and liveable community. I am pleased to see the Province take steps to support growing communities across BC.”

Mike Little, Mayor of District of North Vancouver –
