NDP MLAs Jennifer Rice and Nathan Cullen say adult literacy program will help people build skills to succeed

PRINCE RUPERT – New Democrat MLAs Jennifer Rice and Nathan Cullen says people in the northwest will have more opportunities to improve their literacy, math skills, and digital skills thanks to increased funding for Community Adult Literacy Programs.

“By investing in adult literacy, our government is ensuring people will be able to learn literacy and numeracy skills that will help them succeed in today’s workplace,” said Jennifer Rice, MLA for North Coast. “Everybody should have access to these educational opportunities regardless of their age.”

“It’s very important that people have the necessary literacy and numeracy skills to apply for work, understand their own health, manage their finances, and other daily tasks,” said Nathan Cullen, MLA for Stikine. “With this funding, people will continue to have access to programs that will help them build the skills they need to support themselves and their families.”

Eight organizations are receiving funding for their Community Adult Literacy Program. These community-based programs are offered by trained volunteers and focus on basic literacy, numeracy, life skills and employment preparation, and can be a starting point towards high school completion and/or further education or training.

The following organizations received funding for their community adult literacy programs:

  • Change Makers’ Education Society – Cultural Learning Connections, Raven Tales Revival
  • Gitanyow Huwilp Society – Gitanyow Adult Literacy Program
  • Houston Link to Learning – Houston Community Adult Literacy Program, Houston Community Family Literacy Program
  • Literacy Haida Gwaii – Lifelong Learning on Haida Gwaii
  • North Coast Immigrant & Multicultural Services Society – Community Adult Literacy Program
  • Smithers Community Services Assocation – Community Learning Services
  • Upper Skeena Community Learning Society – The Learning Shop Literacy Hub
  • Bella Coola Valley Learning Society – Bella Coola Valley Community Adult and Family Literacy Program

The New Democrat government invests $3.4 million annually for Community Adult Literacy Programs, as part of our commitment to giving people the skills and opportunities they need to succeed.
