NDP MLAs Lore, Rankin, and Popham say grants will strengthen access to health and safety services in Greater Victoria

VICTORIA – NDP MLAs Grace Lore, Murray Rankin, and Lana Popham say community grants to not-for-profits in Greater Victoria will help organizations buy equipment and build or renovate their facilities in order to improve their services for people.

“I am thrilled that we are supporting Victoria’s vibrant performing arts and sports communities,” said Grace Lore, MLA for Victoria-Beacon Hill. “Improving accessibility and inclusion with new facilities and equipment will help bring people together to appreciate our top-notch talent.”

The Community Gaming Grants program is providing $5.3 million to 49 not-for-profits and organization that will allow them to make improvements so that they can keep on delivering services to people.

“It’s so important that we create opportunities for people to connect with their neighbours while having fun and staying active,” said Lana Popham, MLA for Saanich South. “That’s why I am so excited that we are supporting the Prospect Lake Soccer Club in Saanich to help youth and adults in our community to come together through sport.”

Some of the organizations receiving funding in Greater Victoria include:

  • Pacific Opera Victoria Association – $193,000 for safety enhancements and stagecraft innovation
  • Victoria Multi-Cultural Society (operators of the Victoria Event Centre) – $51,500 for renovations for increased accessibility
  • Gordon Head and Cordova Bay Soccer Club – $250,000 for a turf replacement project
  • Prospect Lake Soccer Club – $250,000 for a turf replacement project

“Youth soccer is a great way for kids to get active,” said Murray Rankin, MLA for Oak Bay-Gordon Head. “As the parent of a son who still plays soccer in this community, I’m pleased that this funding for the Gordon Head and Cordova Bay Soccer Club will be utilized to ensure that players in our community have a fresh field to play on.”

This funding is part of the $140 million distributed annually to not-for-profit organizations that deliver services and make life better for people throughout British Columbia.
