NDP MLAs Rob Fleming and Mitzi Dean say grants will support reconciliation in Greater Victoria

VICTORIA – New Democrat MLAs Rob Fleming and Mitzi Dean say funding for local Indigenous organizations will support the group’s economic and organizational resilience so they can continue their meaningful work for people and families in the community.

“Whatever community they live in, Indigenous people should feel supported,” said Rob Fleming, MLA for Victoria-Swan Lake. “This funding will help Indigenous-led organizations provide more support and services for Indigenous people in Victoria.”

In Greater Victoria, the following organizations are receiving grants:

  • Victoria Native Friendship Centre, $216,000 over three years
  • Surrounded by Cedar Child & Family Services Society, $216,000 over three years

“Indigenous organizations do amazing work in our community,” said Mitzi Dean, MLA for Esquimalt-Metchosin. “As part of our commitment to reconciliation at all levels, we’re supporting their work with multi-year, flexible funding while they continue to serve people across our communities.”

As part of the Indigenous Resilience and Recovery Grant Initiative, 23 non-profit organizations are each receiving a share of nearly $5 million in total funding. The initiative is being administered in partnership with the Vancouver Foundation, United Way BC, and New Relationship Trust.

Throughout the pandemic and recovery, Indigenous non-profit organizations have faced challenges and increased demand for their programs and services. This funding will help address gaps in their operations so they can continue their work.
