NEW WESTMINSTER – New Democrat MLAs Jennifer Whiteside and Aman Singh say that provincial funding for arts organizations and people working in the arts will help the local sector continue to recover from the economic impacts of the pandemic.
“New Westminster’s arts community has faced challenges throughout the pandemic, and our government is eager to support organizations as they continue to build back stronger,” says Jennifer Whiteside, MLA for New Westminster. “From direct funding support for groups like the Arts Council of New Westminster, to creating new space for the Massey Theatre Society, our government is working hard to restore the vibrant arts and identity of our community.”
In New Westminster, the following projects are receiving funding, for a total of $431,990:
- Arts Council of New Westminster, $28,745
- New Westminster EVENT, $16,546
- New Westminster Museum Archives, $89,670
- New Westminster Savage Production Society, $90,359
- Massey Theatre Society, $206,670
“Our vibrant and diverse arts scene reflects our amazing communities, and we know the past few years have been challenging for the people working in this sector,” says Aman Singh, MLA for Richmond-Queensborough. “I am pleased to see our government provide funding for these organizations, so that we can continue to see the amazing work they do.”
The funding is distributed through the BC Arts Council and will provide a total of $34.5 million to arts and culture organizations throughout B.C. Grants will help support infrastructure projects and address rising costs for organizations who have been impacted by a loss of audiences, reduced profits, and increased expenses since the pandemic.
