NDP MLAs say grants for Burnaby organizations will help people access vital community services

BURNABY – New Democrat MLAs Janet Routledge, Anne Kang, Raj Chouhan and Katrina Chen say that people who receive services from local non-profits will benefit from funding to improve community health, accessibility and well-being.

“Local organizations are vital to our work in strengthening communities, and building them back to be more resilient than ever,” says Janet Routledge, MLA for Burnaby North. “These Community Gaming Grants will support organizations like Burnaby Meals on Wheels Society, so that they can keep delivering affordable, local and nutritious food to people in need.”

This year, 54 organizations in Burnaby received over 3 million in funding through the human and social services stream of the Community Gaming Grants program.

Recipients include:

  • Burnaby Meals on Wheels – $62,000
  • Burnaby Children’s Centres Society – $20,000
  • Burnaby Neighbourhood House Society – $100,000
  • Charlford House Society for Women – $73,000

“Organizations across the province have adapted to keep people connected in uncertain times and have provided moments of joy and comfort to people in our community,” says Anne Kang, MLA for Burnaby-Deer Lake. “We are stronger together, and I want people to know that our government is dedicated to supporting these organizations and their valuable work.”

This year, the New Democrat government will distribute more than $61 million in grants to 1,364 human and social services organizations around B.C. This funding means people can continue access to services such as food banks, children and youth programs, mental health supports, and other services that enhance health and wellbeing.

  • Community Gaming Grants provides around $140 million annually to approximately 5,000 not-for-profit organizations that deliver services to people throughout the province.
  • In addition to human and social services, the grants fund arts, culture and sport, public safety and environmental conservation, as well as parent and district parent advisory councils in B.C. schools.
