OAK BAY – New Democrat MLAs Diana Gibson, Nina Krieger, and Lana Popham say people in Oak Bay, Saanich, and Victoria will benefit as local organizations receive grants to support music, theatre, arts and culture programs.
“When we support the arts, we support people, community connections and the local economy,” said Diana Gibson, MLA for Oak Bay-Gordon Head. “ These grants will help arts and culture organizations to deliver and expand programs that contribute to vibrancy throughout our community.”
In the region, 52 organizations are receiving Community Gaming Grants, totalling almost $1.7 million in investments, including:
- Intrepid Theatre Company Society, $70,000
- The Maritime Museum of British Columbia Society, $94,000
- SingYourJoy Young Adult Chorus Society, $20,000
- Victoria and Vancouver Island Greek Community Society, $80,000
- Victoria Shakespeare Society, $23,100
“Our community loves the arts, and wants local organizations to thrive,” said Lana Popham, MLA for Saanich South. “Thanks to this funding, our local arts and culture organizations can grow, build, and create even more.”
Across B.C., 771 not-for-profit organizations received more than $16.6 million to support programs, services and activities related to music, theatre and dance, as well as literary and visual arts.
Program funds are provided from general revenues via provincial commercial gambling revenue in partnership with the B.C. Lottery Corporation.
“People in Victoria enjoy our local arts and culture scene all year round,” said Nina Krieger, MLA for Victoria-Swan Lake. “This funding will help ensure artists can pursue their passions and talents.”
