VANCOUVER – New Democrat MLAs Melanie Mark and Niki Sharma say funding for local Indigenous organizations will support the group’s economic and organizational resilience so they can continue their meaningful work for people and families in the community.
“Being supported by your community is a powerful thing. For too long, Indigenous organizations have not been recognized for the valuable impact they have. This funding for the Urban Native Youth Association will help connect more Indigenous youth to culture and care,” says Melanie Mark, MLA for Vancouver-Mount-Pleasant.
In Vancouver, the following organizations are receiving grants:
- Urban Native Youth Association (UNYA), $216,000 over three years
- Great Bear Initiative Society, $216,000 over three years
- Vancouver Native Housing Society, $216,000 over three years
“Investing in Indigenous-led non-profits, such as the Vancouver Native Housing Society, is not only a crucial step towards reconciliation, but also a demonstration of our commitment to developing a new relationship with Indigenous peoples. This funding will ensure Indigenous people have the resources to create stronger, more vibrant communities,” says Niki Sharma, MLA for Vancouver-Hastings.
As part of the Indigenous Resilience and Recovery Grant Initiative, 23 non-profit organizations are each receiving a share of nearly $5 million in total funding. The initiative is being administered in partnership with the Vancouver Foundation, United Way BC, and New Relationship Trust.
Throughout the pandemic and recovery, Indigenous non-profit organizations have faced challenges and increased demand for their programs and services. This funding will help address gaps in their operations so they can continue their work.
