NDP MLAs say more $10 a Day child care spaces coming to New Westminster

NEW WESTMINSTER – New Democrat MLAs Aman Singh and Jennifer Whiteside say families in New Westminster will save money on child care as local child care sites become $10 a Day ChildCareBC sites where fees are capped at a maximum of $200 a month per child.

“As a parent, I’ve learned first-hand the challenges of accessing childcare while balancing a career,” says Aman Singh, MLA for Richmond-Queensborough. “$10 a day childcare spaces give more families the opportunity to pursue their careers and education while their kids are learning and playing in a nurturing environment.”

Kids Zone Family Daycare in New Westminster is becoming a $10 a Day ChildCareBC site, which means seven child care spaces will have fees dramatically reduced for parents.

“I’ve been hearing from parents in New West about their need for accessible and affordable childcare,” says Jennifer Whiteside, MLA for New Westminster. “Our government is listening, and remains dedicated to strengthening communities by investing in core services like child care.”

This increases the number of $10 a Day ChildCareBC spaces available for families across the province, from 2,500 when the program began in 2018, to more than 6,500. Through a partnership with the Government of Canada, the number of $10 a Day ChildCareBC spaces in the province will more than double again to 12,500 by December 2022.

In addition to $10 a Day child care spaces, the BC New Democrat government is helping tens of thousands of families save as much as $1,600 a month on child care through the Child Care Fee Reduction Initiative and the Affordable Child Care Benefit.

By the end of this year, the average rate of child care will be reduced by 50% from 2019 levels for children five and younger.
