VICTORIA – New Democrat MLAs Grace Lore and Lana Popham say that people in Greater Victoria will benefit from provincial funding to help reduce risks from future disaster related natural hazards and climate change.
Climate change is already impacting communities around the province, and we know that with it, comes increased chance of natural disasters,” said Grace Lore, MLA for Victoria-Beacon Hill. “That’s why we’re supporting nations and local governments to build resiliency into their communities.”
Projects being funded in the region are listed below:
- Victoria – $65,000 for public cooling infrastructure
- Saanich – $132,700 for the Colquitz Park Green Shores Demonstration Project
“There’s never a good time for a disaster, but by supporting nations and municipalities to become more climate-resilient, we can be ready to keep people safer when a disaster happens,” said Lana Popham, MLA for Saanich South.
A total of $23.9 million from the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund (CEPF) will support communities to better prepare for, mitigate and respond to climate-related emergencies such floods and extreme temperatures.
The Disaster Risk Reduction – Climate Adaptation stream under the CEPF supports the Province’s Climate Preparedness and Adaptation Strategy. The CEPF is administered through the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) and funds projects that strengthen the resilience of First Nations and local governments in responding to and preparing for natural disasters and climate change.
