NDP MLAs says grants for Central Island organizations will help people access vital community services

CENTRAL ISLAND – New Democrat MLAs Sheila Malcolmson, Doug Routley, and Adam Walker say that people who receive services from local non-profits will benefit from funding to improve community health, accessibility and well-being.

“These not-for-profit organizations play an important role in our community and I am thankful for their hard work,” said Sheila Malcolmson, MLA for Nanaimo. “This funding will go a long way to ensure they can continue supporting people.”

This year, over 80 organizations in the Cowichan Valley, Nanaimo, and Oceanside regions received over $3 million in funding through the human and social services stream of the Community Gaming Grants program. Recipients include:

  • Tilicum Lelum Aboriginal Society – $78,000
  • Nanaimo Community Hospce Society – $100,000
  • Loaves and Fishes Community Food Bank Society – $169,000
  • Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Vancouver Island – $214,500
  • People for a Healthy Community On Gabriola Society – $67,830

“Whether it’s People for a Healthy Community on Gabriola, the Ladysmith Resources Centre Association, or the Tilicum Lelum Aboriginal Society, these organizations and the others receiving this funding are a valuable resource to the people they serve,” said Doug Routley, MLA for Nanaimo-North Cowichan. “It is great news that our government is able to support their important efforts.”

“Oceanside is full of hardworking and caring people who provide services that community members rely on through these organizations,” said Adam Walker, MLA for Parksville-Qualicum. “Our government recognizes how vital their role is and that’s why we are investing in their work.”

This year, the New Democrat government will distribute more than $61 million in grants to 1,364 human and social services organizations around B.C. This funding means people can continue access to services such as food banks, children and youth programs, mental health supports, and other services that enhance health and wellbeing.
