REALITY CHECK: B.C. Liberals Repeatedly Break Commitments on Gambling

Posted in:

The B.C. Liberals continue to say one thing and do another. The Liberals have gone on the record time and time again promising not to expand gambling.

  • Solicitor General John Les: “There will be no Internet gaming conducted by the B.C. Lottery Corp. — period … We are not going to entertain Internet gaming.” (Hansard, Feb. 21, 2007)
  • B.C. Liberal 2001 election promise: “Stop the expansion of gambling that has increased gambling addiction and put new strains on families.” (‘New Era’ platform document)
  • Gordon Campbell: “I want to build an economy based on winners, not losers, and gambling is always based on losers. The only way government makes money on gambling is because you lose it.”  (Vancouver Sun, June 2, 1999)
  • Kevin Krueger: “Women in British Columbia will die because of gambling expansion; that's the prediction of our experts at UBC. Some 37 percent of the spouses of pathological gamblers abuse their children. So children may die as a result of gambling expansion, and their blood will be on the heads of the government that expanded gambling and of the MLAs who voted for it. This is a serious, serious issue.” (Hansard, June 12, 1997)

Today’s announcement about the expansion of online gaming, in addition to the recent raises in online gambling limits, are a direct contradiction of what the B.C. Liberals have committed to. In light of all the promises this government has broken recently, British Columbians are asking themselves if they can trust anything the B.C. Liberals have to say.
