Liberal claim: “B.C. Rail will be brought into government and wound down as a Crown corporation.”
The facts: Since the B.C. Liberals broke their promise and sold B.C. Rail, they have wasted $191 million on a Crown corporation in charge of 40 kilometres of railway track and no trains.
Liberal claim: “Nothing is more important” than the HST.
The facts: That’s not what the B.C. Liberals said during the election, when they promised British Columbians they wouldn’t bring in the HST because it would raise costs for consumers and restrict B.C.’s control over our own taxes. A few weeks after the election, the B.C. Liberals betrayed British Columbians and broke that promise, announcing a tax which would transfer $1.9 billion in taxes onto the backs of consumers.
Liberal claim: “There are few services that can do more to lift a child to the full opportunities of life than an unequivocally great education.”
The facts: The B.C. Liberals have broken their promise to protect education. Since the election, they have cut over $110 million in annual facilities grants and have downloaded millions more in unfunded costs like increased MSP premiums and unfunded costs associated with all-day Kindergarten, leaving already-strapped school boards scrambling.
Liberal claim: “Innovation is also central to making health care more responsive to patients’ needs and more sustainable for the future.”
The facts: The B.C. Liberals have cut health care research funding, and are dismantling long standing effective programs that both prevent hospitalization and reduce overall costs.
Liberal claim: B.C. will “maximize our potential” to be “a global leader in climate action.”
The facts: The B.C. Liberals undermined our ability to be a global leader in climate action when, after the election, they scrapped incentives for programs like LiveSmart and, with the announcement of the HST, cancelled tax incentives for green products like bicycles and energy-efficient appliances.
