Services and supports expanded to help evacuees in Saanich

SAANICH – New Democrat MLA Murray Rankin is welcoming funding to improve local emergency support services (ESS) for people evacuated from their homes during natural disasters or other emergencies.

When disasters strike, emergency support services are there to help those who have to leave home, often in a hurry,” said Murray Rankin, MLA for Oak Bay-Gordon Head. “Our government is funding this modernization so that people can continue to rely on these important services.”

Saanich is receiving $24,613 in funding for their Modernization Project 2023, and the Capital Regional District is receiving $18,000 for the Electoral Area Evacuee Registration & Assistance Team.

In total, $2.2 million is being distributed to communities across the province. The funding will expand local capacity to provide emergency support services through volunteer recruitment, retention, training, and the purchase of supplies and equipment. This funding will also support the modernization of local ESS programs to move toward digital registration and reporting.
