COURTENAY – New Democrat MLA Ronna-Rae Leonard is welcoming funding to improve local emergency support services (ESS) for people evacuated from their homes during natural disasters or other emergencies.

“Natural disasters can cause so much stress for everyone involved, but especially for those that have to be evacuated from their homes and communities,” said Ronna-Rae Leonard, MLA for Courtenay-Comox. “This investment will help us support people when they need it, and ensure that the Comox Valley is ready to help evacuees in times of crisis.”

The Comox Valley Regional District is receiving $25,000 in funding for a project titled “Hosting with Humility: Hosting Ourselves.”

In total, $2.2 million is being distributed to communities across the province. The funding will expand local capacity to provide emergency support services through volunteer recruitment, retention, training, and the purchase of supplies and equipment. This funding will also support the modernization of local ESS programs to move toward digital registration and reporting.
