VANCOUVER – New Democrat multiculturalism critic Bruce Ralston issued the following statement commemorating the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, founder of the Sikh religion:
“Today British Columbians, Sikh and non-Sikh alike, are honouring Guru Nanak’s birthday. Our province is a beneficiary of his teachings emphasizing community service, selflessness, and equality.
“By practicing these values in all corners of our province, the Sikh community has made both immeasurable contributions to local communities, and helped B.C. become a more generous and united society.
“The Sikh community’s response to Typhoon Haiyan exemplifies this. Exercising support and concern for the Filipino community – here and abroad – it is actively raising relief funds to help the Philippines stabilize in the short term and then rebuild.
“On behalf of New Democrats, I wish British Columbians a joyous Gurpurab.”
