Vancouver – New Democrat leader Adrian Dix issued the following statement on the passing of Nelson Mandela, human rights leader and former President of the Republic of South Africa:

“Nelson Mandela lived an extraordinary life that was at the heart of humankind’s progress towards social justice, human rights and equality. He was and remains an inspiration to everyone who struggles for freedom and the equality of all people.

“Above all, he was a towering leadership figure in the struggle of South Africans to transition from the evils of apartheid to a peaceful, inclusive democracy. That he was able to bring that change about without violence and with an enduring commitment to democratic principles is his perhaps his finest achievement. “
